Adding an equation to Table in Word

I would like to know if it's possible to add equations to a table in Word to convert from Nicaraguan currency to Canadian currency. In the Table that I have created, I have inserted equations by going to the insert icon, selecting the Formula icon, and in the menu that appears I selected to add a new equation. When I have done so, a small box appears in the cell where I want to insert the formula. After typing in the formula I wish to use, the formula remains as text in the cell and not as an equation that gives me the answer. So in the 2nd column, I would like to insert the amount in Nicaraguan Currency and then in the 3rd column I would like to place the equation that would convert that amount In Canadian Dollars. Also, is it possible to take the amount in the cell in the third column and link it to another cell in another table within this same document?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As far as I know, the Equation facility in Word (Insert tab > Symbols group > Equation) is for display only; it can't perform calculations.

To calculate values in a table cell, you need one or more formula fields. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/use-a-formula-in-a-word-or-outlook-table-cbd0596e-ea8a-485e-a35d-b2cb2c4f3e27.

If the equation is not calculating, make sure that you have entered it correctly and that there are no syntax errors. Also, check that the cell formatting is set to "Currency" so that the result is displayed correctly.

To link the amount in the third column to another cell in another table within the same document, you can use a cross-reference. Here's how:

    1. Select the cell with the amount in the third column.
    2. Go to the "Insert" tab and click on the "Cross-reference" button.
    3. In the "Reference type" dropdown, select "Bookmark".
    4. In the "Insert reference to" dropdown, select "Bookmark text".
    5. Select the bookmark you want to link to from the "For which bookmark" dropdown.
    6. Click "Insert" to insert the cross-reference.

So I followed your instructions and here is what happened:

When I have entered into the equation tools and select new equation it gives me this box in the cell of the table. In Spanish the phrase says: Write your equation here.

Then I wrote my equation in the box and showed up like this in the table:

Later I enter in some data in Column A2 and this is the result:

I am not sure why it isn't calculating. It seems to me that the equation is just a static or picture form of the equation and not an equation that calculates anything, Is there a reason why? I did press enter after entering the formula.

Thanks for your patience in trying to help me solve this problem.

Yes, it is possible to add equations to a table in Word. To insert an equation in a table cell, you can follow these steps:

    1. Click on the cell where you want to insert the equation.
    2. Go to the "Insert" tab in the ribbon.
    3. Click on the "Equation" button in the "Symbols" group.
    4. In the "Equation Tools" tab that appears, you can select the type of equation you want to insert, or you can type in your own equation using the symbols and templates provided.
    5. Once you have entered your equation, press "Enter" to insert it into the cell.

To convert from Nicaraguan currency to Canadian currency, you can use the following equation:

=Amount in Nicaraguan Currency * Exchange Rate

Replace "Amount in Nicaraguan Currency" with the cell reference for the amount you want to convert, and replace "Exchange Rate" with the current exchange rate between the two currencies.

To link the amount in the third column to another cell in another table within the same document, you can follow these steps:

    1. Select the cell in the third column that contains the converted amount.
    2. Press "Ctrl+C" to copy the cell.
    3. Go to the other table where you want to link the amount.
    4. Select the cell where you want to insert the link.
    5. Right-click on the cell and select "Paste Special".
    6. In the "Paste Special" dialog box, select "Paste Link" and click "OK".

This will create a link between the two cells, so that any changes made to the amount in the original table will be reflected in the linked cell in the other table.
