When opening MS Word, I get a message saying that there is an error in preventing Word from working correctly. The message says that Word needs to be closed and asks if I would like it to be repaired now.

That message is not about a document but rather about a problem with the installation of Word, itself.

You want to do a more comprehensive repair than the one offered when you get the message.

As mentioned, try an Online repair.

Repair an Office application - Office Support

It will be a repair of Office, as a whole, not just Word.

    Dear Ron,

I see MS 365, not MS Word.

How long does it take for this process?

I see a msg that says "Please wait until the current program is finished uninstalling or being changed".

Should I shut down and re-start?

MS 365 is what you want, yes. (It is one of the many names that is being used by Microsoft for Office these days.)

This process can take 30 minutes or more, during which you can use your computer but not any of the Office applications.

While a restart after doing this is not necessary, Doing one after it is done is not a bad idea.

The safe mode suggested is a diagnostic step but is not usually used for this message.

Word itself or a specific doc?

Restart the PC, once fully loaded, repair Office,> Apps & Features>Select Office your version>Modify /Repair, once the repair completes re-test
