Why can't I select text in Word anymore by using mouse click and drag?

I am suddenly unable to select text in Word by clicking and dragging using mouse. I can select text this way in all other applications.This is a new problem as of this week. I can select text by using the shift and arrow keys but that is more time consuming. What changed? I am using a MacBook Pro.

    In the future please do not tack onto an existing thread. Nothing personal but doing so is referred to as hijacking the thread. The content of other threads may not be relevant but more importantly responders rarely revisit old threads so your message may never be seen or addressed.

    If the existing suggestions don't work for you submit a new message of your own stating all particulars relevant to your issue, including macOS & Office Version Numbers.

    BTW: A restart of the Mac quite often is the only cure needed for this as well as many other abnormalities.

    The same happened to me. This is an answer like stop and start your computer. How about telling us a little of what's happening under the covers? This didn't work by the way.

    There are a few things to try:

    1. Try cleaning the Word cache folder.
    2. Try running Mac in safe mode
    3. Check and update your Word app.
