How can I access the Office 365 web apps on a Chromebook? When I choose "Open in Browser", the device tries to launch the OneDrive app.

I simply want to edit files that are in my OneDrive using the Office 365 web apps through the Chrome browser on a Chromebook. When I try to use the "Open in Browser" option from the web page (office.com), the device launches the OneDrive app instead, which then attempts to install the Office 365 app on my device. However, the Office 365 app is not compatible with this Chromebook.

How can I use the in-browser Office 365 web apps (ex: Excel, Word) instead of attempting to launch apps installed on the device?

Edit: I uninstalled the OneDrive app and that seems to have allowed the files and apps to launch in-browser as intended. I will just avoid installing the OneDrive app on the Chromebook since it really adds no value anyway.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconveniences,

I'm glad to hear that you solved your issue with accessing the Office 365 web apps on your Chromebook.

It sounds like the OneDrive app was interfering with the browser's ability to open the Office 365 web apps. This might be because the OneDrive app tries to sync your files with the cloud and launch the Office 365 app on your device, which is not supported on a Chromebook.

As you discovered, uninstalling the OneDrive app allows you to use the Office 365 web apps in the browser without any problems. You can also install the Office Online extension from the Chrome Web Store, which gives you fast access to create and edit Office files in the browser.

Alternatively, you can go to office.com and sign in with your Microsoft 365 account to access the Office web apps from there.

Let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance.

    Regards, Sola
