Litigation Hold for 365 Business

We currently have the following licensees:

• Microsoft 365 Business Basic
• Microsoft 365 Business Standard

We have recently been asked to put some mailboxes on Litigation hold. It doent appear we can add the archiving that includes the Litigation hold to these licenses. We I attempt to purchase it looks like our licenses our not supported.

Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online (add-on)

A cloud-based, enterprise-class archiving solution for Office 365 Enterprise K1 and Exchange Online (Plan 1). This solution can assist your organization with archiving, compliance, regulatory, and e-discovery challenges.

Can you confirm this will work with our Microsoft 365 Business licenses or is there another Add-On that will allow us to add a litigation hold.

Thanks.

Thanks! I'll try to add one and see if it applies. However, I'm sure you could purchase a subscription even if you can actually use it! :)

    Hi Matt,

As far as I can see those are prerequisites to purchasing the addon, but that does not necessarily mean it will work. You can try purchasing it and seeing if the litigation button works.

My best insight is to follow the documentation provided above, which stated you need Exchange Online (Plan 1) to buy the addon, or you can just buy Exchange Online (Plan 2) without the addon.

    Hi Matt,

You can use the following licenses to do so:

To place an Exchange Online mailbox on Litigation hold, it must be assigned an Exchange Online Plan 2 license. If a mailbox is assigned an Exchange Online Plan 1 license, you would have to assign it a separate Exchange Online Archiving license to place it on hold.

    This means:

    • Exchange Online Plan 2; or
    • Exchange Online Plan 1 + Exchange Online Archiving for Exchange Online.

Thanks for your quick reply. As I mentioned I only have the following licenses.

    • Microsoft 365 Business Basic
    • Microsoft 365 Business Standard

Is it possible to add Exchange Online Archiving license to these licenses?

    Matt
