That is what templates are for. Create a document that has your preferred page numbering. Then save is as a template with a dotx ending. The, when you need a document with that page number format, choose File>New, select the template with that format and create a new document from it.

To do that for all new documents, open your Normal.dotm template, add page numbering in your preferred format, then save. Normal.dotm is the file used to create new blank documents automatically.

If you need further details, please start a new thread stating your operating system and Office version. That way you'll get better answers than tagging on to someone else's question.

Which version of Word (Office) do you have? The full version running under Windows provides access to the Page Number Format dialog box via Insert tab > Header & Footer group > Page Number > Format Page Numbers.

Online versions of Word that you access via OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams will have fewer options.

You can also create your own page number building blocks.

First, though, learn more about page numbers, which are fields.

Let me refine the question: how do you change the DEFAULT page number FORMAT. Currently it is x where x is a numeral. Let us imagine, though, that one wants the default to be -x-. This easily done per document, but there does not seem to be a method for changing it for ALL new documents. So, I for one would be grateful if the focus of the response could be on the default rather than the particular document, and on the format rather than the font. It may be that there is no solution. That would be nice to know as well.
