How to manually enable Auto Format or Format Painter?

For details, I have been using repeatedly a mix format of bold and underline for multiple highlighted words. I edit the format one by one, bold then underline.

I noticed that after sometimes enough for a pattern to be recognized that once I bold a word then Words automatically apply underline as well.

How do I make use of this? Can I set the format myself and use a shortcut key? Is there additional format (color, size, etc.) that can be applied?

Thanks, in advance.

The format painter applies direct formatting to the text, which is very inefficient. Instead, create a character style that includes all the font formatting you want. That style can be added to the style gallery in the Home ribbon, assigned to a shortcut key combination, and/or added to the Quick Access toolbar. It will also be available in any document if you store it in the Normal template.

You may have the Autoformat as you type option set to define styles based on your formatting. I generally keep this unchecked because I like to define my styles purposefully. See AutoFormat and AutoCorrect (Tame AutoFormat) by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP.

    Learn to use Styles.

The Strong character style, by default, is Bold.

That may be what is being changed.

    Hello Phung N,

I'm Segunfunmi, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thank you for posting your query in this forum.

If you're looking to format text in Microsoft Word, a few tips and tricks can help you achieve the desired look. Firstly, you can select the text you want to format and then choose an option to change the font, font size, or font color or make the text bold, italic, or underlined.

You can also use shortcut keys to format text in Word. For instance, you can use Ctrl+B to make the text bold, Ctrl+I to make it italic, and Ctrl+U to underline it. Additionally, you can use Ctrl+E to centre the text, Ctrl+L to align it to the left, and Ctrl+R to align it to the right. You can also increase or decrease the font size by 1 point using the Ctrl+Right bracket (]) or Ctrl+Left bracket ([), respectively.

If you want to copy the formatting from one place to another, you can select the text with the formatting you want to copy, click Format Painter, and then select the text to which you want to copy the formatting.

Moreover, you can add special formatting such as strikethrough or subscript, adjust the line spacing of your document, apply styles and themes, or create a bulleted or numbered list to make your document look professional and polished.

I hope these tips help you format your document efficiently. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

    Kind regards, Segunfunmi.
