How do I delete a massive amount of rows in an Excel spreadsheet?

I am creating my own address book and somehow I have ended up with far too many rows than what is needed presently and want to delete all the rows not needed.

I have tried highlighting the rows and then deleting them, but they do not delete. I want the spreadsheet to go to row 1,000 and all below that to be deleted and presently the spreadsheet goes to 12,011 and I cannot delete the rows after 1,000.

Any help with this please?

I have asked this question before a couple of folks came in with suggestions, however none of the suggestion worked. Here is what I have done to eliminate the excessive number of rows.

I have data established down to only row number 145. However, for some weird reason I have yet to understand, the spreadsheet goes to row 12,011.

So here is what I have tried:

First , I have highlighted all rows past row 1005 so row 1006 down to row 12,011 are highlighted.

Then I tried a command from the ribbon which is "Delete Cells", nothing happened although in the past this would delete a small number of rows.

Then I tried right clicking and using the command "CUT" - nothing

Then I tried right clicking and using the command "DELETE" - nothing

I do not understand why these rows will not delete but the other half is, I do not know how I ended up with so many rows. I want all these rows from 1006 through 12,011 gone there are only 1,005 rows. Why can I delete or get rid of these excessive rows?

So now I decided I know how to get rid of this mess. I opened a new file, the I went into the file with the excessive rows, and copied rows 1 thru row 1,005. Then I went into the new file and did CTRL+V and unbelievably again I ended up with 12,011 rows - WHY? I know if I copy the columns into a new file I would expect to the all of the 12,011 rows again even though they are empty. This is becoming very frustrating to say the very least. And what makes it even more frustrating is that I am sure there are folks out there who know how to resolve this issue, but we have not heard from them.

So, PLEASE, if you know for sure how to resolve this issue, will you please tell us how to do it?

    Hi TemporaryUser0101,

Thank you for reaching out. My name is Leo, a user just like you. I'd be happy to help you with your concern.

It seems that you are referring to the empty rows and want to delete them. However, as far as I know, I haven't tried or found any option to delete those extra rows. Since these are empty rows, they don't affect the size of the document, and Excel will always disregard them when you are trying to print or save it as a PDF. If you want to get rid of all those unused rows, as a workaround, you can also try hiding them. To do this, in your Excel, press Ctrl + G, then type 1006:1048576 and select OK. Right-click the highlighted rows, then choose the option to hide. Then those rows will no longer be visible. I hope this helps!

I pulled the above steps from Official Microsoft Community Support website. For reference, here's the link below:

    Best Regards,
