I am trying to hide one document from one specific user on my document library on SharePoint. Is there a way to do that or do can I only hide documents from groups?

    Hi Carnea,

    Thanks for posting back.

For "it did not work", I suppose you mean this user can still see the document. If so, this means the user still has access to this file. I recommend you check the access for the file. Go to the SharePoint library in the browser, select the related file, click the three dots, Manage Access, and make sure this user is not under the People tab. If you can still see this user, you can select this user and remove this user's permission. After that, you can wait for a few minutes, and then check the result.

If this user can still see the document after checking the above steps, please check this user's permission. Select the related file, click the three dots> Manage Access> In the Manage Access dialog, click the three dots in the upper-right corner and select Advanced Settings> click Check Permissions> input this user and check permissions. After that, please take a full screenshot and click "Insert Image" to upload it.

    Hi Carnea,

According to your description, I suppose the specific user is added as a site member or a site visitor (added to one group).

If not, please point it out and let us know.

If so, to achieve your needs, please try the following steps.

    1. Create a new SharePoint group, add all users in the original group except for specific users, and assign the same permission level to the new group.

Go to the site, Settings> Site Permissions> Advanced permissions settings> Create Group> config the group.

    1. Break permission inheritance of this document and edit existing permissions for it.

Go to the library, find and select the document, click the three dots> Manage Access> In the Manage Access dialog, click the three dots in the upper-right corner and select Advanced Settings> click Stop Inheriting Permissions.

Select the original group (the group with all users and the specific user), and click Remove User Permissions. After that, click Grant Permissions, in the Invite people tab, type the new group name. The dialog should automatically search for the new group and list it. Select and add the new group, click "SHOW OPTIONS" and check the permission. Later, click Share.

After trying the above steps, the specific user won't be able to see this document in the library. To verify this, please go back to the library, select the file, click the three dots> Manage Access> In the Manage Access dialog, under the People tab, make sure you don't see this user.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,
