How to change margins in word on different pages WITHOUT section breaks

Hello,

I am working on a doctoral dissertation and my institution has given us the guidelines for our manuscript. I have this set up, with Roman numerals on the first several pages, then switching to Arabic numerals for the main body of the manuscript. The first page of each section should have a 2" top margin and subsequent pages in that section should have a 1" margin. When I change the margins in Word for the sections, it is adding a section break and resetting the page number for the next section.

How can I change the top margins without inserting a section break and resetting my page numbers?

Page margins are set per section. You cannot have different margins for different pages within a section.

But you can specify "Link to previous" for a section. It will use the same page number formatting as the previous section.

And you can specify whether page numbers continue from the previous section or restart, for each section separately:

This is similar to setting up a letterhead with different spacing on the first page.

You would use the Different First Page setting for your header/footer and follow the directions given by Suzanne.

For more information and ideas, see:

This is a Section setting. Be aware that there are other things that create section breaks automatically and without really telling you. When that happens, you need to set those new sections to not have the Different First Page setting.
