Why does Project Change the filenames in recent list to the first 6 characters of the name followed by ~1 since Dec 5 2023?

In the last few days, the MS Project's recent list no longer shows the full filename. It only shows the first 6 characters and then adds a squiggle and a number. For example, I have a series of projects named TerriCheesemanCottage-1, TerriCheesemanCottage-2, etc. to TerriCheesemanCottage-6. The last time I used MS Project and the full file names were listed was the evening of December 5, 2023. The next time that I used the program was December 10, 2023, and the filenames that I opened after this date appear in the recent list as TerriC~1, TerriC~2, etc. The number appears to be in the order that I opened the files and is not related to the number in the filename. What happened? How can I get the full filenames to appear in the recent list again?

To those who may follow this thread,

This issue was resolved with the release of the January 04 version 2312 (Build 17126.20126).

    Terri Cheeseman/Dave Detwiler1/ Agent C,

Yup, there is gremlin in the works that apparently was introduced with the latest update for Project. I use Project 2019 Pro with the latest update installed, version 2311 (build 17029.20068 CTR). I did a quick test with an older file and a new file. In both cases, the filename as it appears in "open recent" files is indeed truncated with the tilde (~). However, the full file name appears in file explorer and the caption when the file is opened.

The tilde in the file name is reminiscent of a backup of the file "lingering in the cache".

Although annoying, this doesn't appear to be a "do or die" issue. I suggest you submit a request via Project's feedback portal, "I don't like something".

    John

OH MAN me too!! And while it is not 'do or die', it's SUPER frustrating and irritating. What was once great functionality has turned into something pretty useless. Please fix it!

    Hi Tina,

Here is the requested screenshot. There was no update to my knowledge. But I have updates set to automatic, so I don't always notice when they happen. I repaired the Project program and the issue is still there. I also noticed that in the list of programs, Project is listed twice with the same information. See below.

    Best regards,

    Terri

    Dear Terri Cheeseman,

Greetings! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry you have issue with project filenames when using Microsoft Project.

I didn't reproduce the same issue when testing in Project desktop application. May I know the Version and Channel of your Project? I'd like to test in same version as yours.

Please go to File>Account, then capture a full screenshot of Product Information from the Account page.

Since you mentioned this issue happens in the last few days, may I know if there is anything change with Project? Does this issue happen after Project update?

We look forward to hearing from you; Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to narrow down the situation and try to find a solution.

Thanks for your time and cooperation! We hope you have a nice day, stay safe and healthy.

    Sincerely,

    Tina | Microsoft Community Moderator
