How do I use Ancient Greek in Microsoft Word?

I am needing to use Ancient Greek in my writing projects, but Microsoft Word seems to no longer have this option. Many online instructions say to click on the "insert" tab, and then click "symbols." The "symbols" tab no longer exists on Microsoft Word. It is now "Advanced Symbols," and the instructions do not apply.

On the screenshot below, you will see that a few Greek symbols are present, but not the breadth of the language as was there before.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your question.

If you're looking to type Ancient Greek characters in Microsoft Word, try these following steps:

    1. Enable Greek Language Keyboard:
      • Go to your computer's settings and add the Greek language keyboard.
      • On Windows, you can do this by going to Settings > Time & Language > Language > Preferred languages. Add Greek and set it as your default language.
      • On macOS, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources. Add Greek and make sure it's selected.
    2. Switch to Greek Keyboard:
      • Once you have enabled the Greek keyboard, you can switch between the English and Greek keyboards as needed. There's usually an indicator on your taskbar or menu bar showing the current keyboard.
    3. Use Alt Codes (Windows) or Character Viewer (Mac):
      • On Windows, you can use Alt codes to type specific characters. For example, for lowercase alpha (α), you can hold down the Alt key and type 945 on the numeric keypad.
      • On macOS, you can use the Character Viewer. Press Command + Control + Space to open it, then search for and insert the Greek characters you need.
    4. Install a Specialized Font:
      • Download and install a font that supports Ancient Greek characters. Some fonts like "SPIonic" or "Arial Unicode MS" include a wide range of characters, including Ancient Greek.
    5. Use Online Tools:
      • If you find the above methods cumbersome, you can use online tools to generate Greek characters and copy-paste them into your Word document.

Try them out and let me know how it goes.

What displays in the grid depends on the Font selected. The default iss the Symbol font which contains very few glyphs.

Select a font such as MS Gothic & another list will appear to the right of the font list. From that second list select Greek/Roman Characters.

If the need is to actually write in Greek rather than inserting individual characters the suggestions from Bill Yuen1 are far more efficient.
