How to view the changes made in a selected version of a Word document?

I have a Word document that is stored in a SharePoint document library. There are several versions of this document. I want to view the changes made in a particular version.

This is what I've tried.

In SharePoint, click the ellipsis next to the document, select Version History, click View.

Result: It doesn't show me that version of the document, just a dialog showing the document properties.

In the Word desktop app, click Version History, select the version I want to see the changes for. It opens in a new window. Click Compare. Instead of showing me the changes made in that version of the document it, instead it shows me the difference between that version of the document and my latest version.

How do I view the changes made in a specific version of a Word document?

"Opening the file directly in the client"

If by that you mean in SharePoint click Open -> Open in App then that just shows me the latest version of the file. How is that enabling me to view the changes made in an earlier version?

"Or you can open the file and click on Review-Vision"

If by that you mean "Review-Version" then there is no "Version" button on the Review ribbon tab in either the desktop nor the web app.

    Dear Neutrino Sunset

    Good day!

I am sorry that I gave the history version of Excel before because the location of the Excel web side and the Word web side to view the history version is different.

Please open the Word document in the web side, click File - Information, you should be able to see the historical document.

We look forward to your reply. Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,

I don't know what the local activation status warning was about, but it seemed to go away by itself.

Autosave I have intentionally disabled as it is a terrible feature. Once of the biggest annoyances we have is our SharePoint documents having spurious versions added due to people accidentally saving unintended changes due to autosave.

For what ever reason the Show Edits in Version History is now working. The first time it started working it had a help popup displayed over it explaining the Show Edits button as though it was a new feature. So perhaps for some reason an update had been delayed or not fully installed, even though I usually reboot the system every few days.

I did not encounter this phenomenon in my tests: File-Info- Vision History:

After showing the edits, when the mouse hovers, I can see the user's actions:

So I see that if you open the document using the web based Word app then under Version History there is a button labelled 'Show Changes', which does indeed show what I'm looking for, but if I open the document in the desktop app then the Version History does not contain that option.

    Why is that?

Is the Show Changes option available somewhere else in the desktop app or not available on the desktop app at all?
