Although my scrolling option for my mouse is set to inactive, the mouse will scroll automatically. Any recommendations for remediating this issue?

    Hi SeanEB_575

Welcome to the forum. My name is Segunfunmi, and I am an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user just like you. I appreciate you reaching out to me with your query.

If your mouse is misbehaving and scrolling on its own, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue. Let’s tackle this one step at a time:

Reconnect the Mouse: First, disconnect the mouse from the USB port and plug it back in. Sometimes, reconnecting the mouse can reset the drivers and resolve the issue.

Check Batteries (For Wireless Mice): If you’re using a wireless mouse, low battery power is a common cause of erratic behavior. Replace the batteries with fresh ones to rule out this possibility. Consider using rechargeable batteries, so you always have a charged set on hand.

Clean the Mouse: Dirt, dust, and food particles can accumulate around the scroll wheel, affecting its functionality. Clean the mouse thoroughly, paying attention to the scroll wheel area. If your mouse is wireless, follow specific guidelines for cleaning wireless mice.

Check for Touchpad Interference (Laptop Users): If you’re using a laptop, something touching the touchpad (like spilled water) could interfere with the mouse. Temporarily disable the touchpad to see if that resolves the issue.

Review Mouse Wheel Settings: Open your computer’s settings (Control Panel on Windows, System Preferences on macOS).

Look for mouse settings and check if anything is misconfigured. Adjust the number of lines to scroll or change the scrolling behaviour as needed. Try Different USB Ports: If you’re using a wired mouse, try a different USB port. A faulty port could be causing the issue.

Remember, these steps apply to all computer systems using mice, whether you’re on Windows 10, macOS, or another operating system. Hopefully, one of these solutions will get your mouse scrolling smoothly again!

I hope that the information provided has been helpful to you. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Warm regards Segunfunmi

If Win11 you update drivers ONLY via the PC maker, NOT device manager, and in win update ensure 'get latest updates' is not set

    Hi, Segunfunmi,

Thank you for your rapid response as I've been working to resolve this all morning. I tried most of the remediation efforts (I'm using AIO PC) you provided above without success. However, I did find a solution that one should try after exhausting ALL that apply above. I found this video successful in my efforts to remediate this issue:

Allow me to thank you, Segunfunmi, for all your efforts! I believe that the steps above should be tried FIRST as we do not know if the fix could have been successful due to a combination of all.

    Best regards,

    Sean

    Hi, Palcouk,

Thank you. I did check my system drivers as well as device drivers and all are up to date and, according to the Device Manager, functioning as expected. That is what has me scratching my head.

    Best regards,

    Sean

Review your mouse settings, allthough such problems can also be caused by the display driver.
