Font color changes not persisting after closing & reopening file

I've been encountering an issue lately where font color changes in a PowerPoint presentation refuse to persist after saving the file and reopening it later.
My screenshots are all failing to upload, so please refer to the hyperlinks for images.

For context, here is a small sampleof one of my slides. The following slidehas a simple font color change.
The idea is to use the morph feature between the first and second slide.

Further in the powerpoint, I have this small small slide sample. What I've done repeatedly is recolor a digit in the numerators as seen here.

I can see the change being properly made on the screen, and it will remain if I leave the slide or go into presentation mode. However, if I save the presentation and return to that slide, I get missing color changes like this.

Some potentially relevant information:

  • Slide width = 40 inches
  • Slide height = 22.5 inches
  • Total slides = 38
  • Powerpoint Version = 2402
  • Powerpoint Build 17328.20184
  • Windows edition = Windows 10 Home
  • Windows version = 22H2
  • OS build = 19045.4170

Things I've tried:

  1. Creating a whole new slide, not copying any slide design or text from the slide experiencing errors.
  2. Creating a whole new PowerPoint project, not copying any slide design or text from the previous project experiencing errors.
  3. Disabling cloud saves and enabling saving to my local machine only.
  4. Embedding fonts in the file.
  5. Disabling embedding fonts in the file.
  6. Updating PowerPoint version.

Nothing has worked so far, unfortunately. Not sure why this could be happening. Would really appreciate any insight on how to fix this issue, thank you.

    Hi Tyler,

Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into coming back to this thread and for letting us know about your concern. This is because it will be valuable information that could help other users having the same issue with PowerPoint.

Thank you for sharing the workaround on how to do this. We will leave this thread available so that other users can see it as a reference.

I recommend sharing this feedback with the relevant product teams or developers. User feedback plays a crucial role in shaping software improvements, and your idea could potentially lead to a more user-friendly experience.

    • Use the Feedback Hub app to report problems or suggest improvements related to Windows 11 or Windows 10.
    • Open the Feedback Hub app by either:
      • Typing “Feedback Hub” in the search bar and selecting the app from the list.
      • Pressing the Windows logo key + F (which also takes a screenshot and uploads it to the Feedback tab).
    • On the Feedback Hub home page, you can:
      • Search for existing feedback similar to yours and upvote it.
      • Add new feedback, including attaching screenshots or recording the process that led to the problem.

I understand that you've tried a lot of troubleshooting steps to get this resolved, in your case I may recommend to contact our live support so they can personally assist you on this.

    Hello Ciarra,

I've repaired Office per step 1, which finished successfully.

I don't believe uninstalling and reinstalling is necessary, as PowerPoint performs perfectly outside of this one small problem.
The other steps in your list pertain to Word which this issue is not connected to.

I've noticed a few odd things here which I would like to show some pictures of. Please refer to the hyperlinks again.
I'll use this slide section as an example in case my original post wasn't clear.

1.) If I try to make this intended change, save the file and then reopen it, I get this result.

2.) I can color the entire equation, save the project, and reopen it with persisting changes.

3.) I can color every denominator, save the project, and reopen it with persisting changes.

4.) If I color the 1 digit in the numerator and the following units, only some changes persist upon reopening.
Notice that it failed to save the coloring of the 1 digit in the 2nd ratio on the left-hand side of the equation.

This seems to suggest that there may be some sort of font color bug related to specific instances of the equation feature in PowerPoint.
The issue can be reproduced 100% of the times I attempt it, and I can copy of the file for further investigation if needed.

For now, I'm able to get around the issue by doing these steps:

With this workaround, the changes persist upon saving and reopening. Not exactly an optimal solution. Hopefully this makes sense.

    HiTyler,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

Please accept our warmest welcome here at Community Support.

Based on your problem description it seems that you've tried numerous attempts to resolve the issue on your PowerPoint. And it appears that most of the basic necessary steps have been executed by you.

What we can recommend is to try and do a repair of your Office.

    1. Repair Office:
    2. Uninstall Office: If you want to completely remove Microsoft Office from your PC, follow these steps: Use the Control Panel to uninstall Microsoft 365 or download the uninstall support tool.
      • Option 1: Uninstall from Control Panel
        • Go to the Control Panel.
        • Select Microsoft 365 and uninstall it.
      • Option 2: Completely Uninstall with the Uninstall Support Tool
        • Download the Easy Fix tool.
        • Run the tool and follow the prompts.
    3. Newer Versions of Office (2013 and later):
      • Open any Office app (e.g., Word).
      • Create a new blank document.
      • Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook).
      • Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.
      • If you don’t see the Update Now option right away, click Enable Updates first.
      • Close the “You’re up to date!” window after Office finishes checking for and installing updates.
    4. To update Windows, follow these steps:
      1. Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
      2. In the Settings app, choose the Windows Update option from the left panel.
      3. Click the Check for updates button.
    5. Check Document Styles:
      • Open the problematic document in Microsoft Word.
      • Go to the Developer tab (if not visible, enable it by clicking File > Options > Customize Ribbon and selecting the Developer option).
      • Click on the Document Template button.
      • In the Templates and Add-Ins dialog, turn off the option for “Automatically update document styles”.
      • Confirm the settings and save the document.
    6. Set Default Font:
      • Open the document and navigate to the Font settings.
      • Choose the appropriate font and click on the “Set as Default” button.
      • Select the option “This document only?” to avoid affecting other documents.
      • Save and close the document.
      • Reopen it to check if the font issue persists^.^
    7. Modify the Normal Template (Normal.dotm):
      • Navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates.
      • Double-click to open the Normal template (Normal.dotm) in Word. It appears blank but remembers any changes you make.
      • Adjust fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings as desired.
      • Click the File tab and then Save to update the template.

If the problem persists, please feel free to ask and we'll try our best to help you.

    Respectfully,

    Ciarra B.
