Windows 2012 R2 in place upgrade to windows 2016 issue

I have a windows 2012 R2 VM which I like to to in place upgrade to 2016. It seems like you can mount the ISO file for Windows 2016 and run setup/upgrade.

The issue is that I am not sure where to get the ISO file. Current VM is setup and licensed by Microsoft and I am trying to avoid paying for another license. I am assuming that server license is managed and covered by Microsoft.

Any ideas?

    Hi,

Unfortunatly you can't reuse the windows 2012 R2 licence to activate windows 2016.

You have to buy another licence for windows 2016.

Regarding the ISO, whan you buy the licence for windows ask a DVD or a ISO file for windows 2016.

You can also dowload evaluation version from this link:

Not sure what is meant. An upgrade from 2012 to Server 2016 is not free. Also, an in-place upgrade is never recommended. Better option is to stand up the new one from clean install media, patch fully and migrate roles over. In order to perform an in-place upgrade licensed installation media must be used.
