Hello Dianne,
My name is EngineTyme, an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you and I would be glad to help you.
I understand that you are encountering an issue with accessing your Word documents, specifically receiving the “User does not have access privileges” message. Let’s troubleshoot this together! Here are some steps you can follow to address this issue:
- Changing File Permissions:
Right-click on the Word document that’s causing the problem.
Select Properties from the context menu.
Navigate to the Security tab.
If you see a line stating “You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object,” it means your account doesn’t have sufficient authorization to view the file.
Click on Advanced at the bottom of the screen.
In the permissions tab, click on “Add”.
Select “Authenticated Users” from the list and press OK.
Now the user/group will be populated automatically in the object namespace.
- Check Deny Permissions:
Similar to the previous step, right-click on the Word document and select Properties.
Navigate to the Security tab.
Click on the Edit button.
Ensure that all options under Allow are checked to grant permissions to all authenticated users.
Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.
- Delete Personal Information:
Sometimes personal information embedded in the document can cause access issues.
Right-click on the Word document and select Properties.
Look for any personal information or metadata in the Details tab.
If you find any, consider removing it and then try opening the file again.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concern.
