On Word, my page is divided into two columns. I want to add a footnote on the right column but it adds the footnote under the left column. How can I fix this. ( I recently updated the program.)

The screen shot below shows the Save As dialog box. You will have to change the file type in the "Save as type" drop down. Choose the "Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc)" format.

If the document is in compatibility mode (created in an older version of Word or saved in the format of an older version), footnotes are treated differently.

For example, if the document is in compatibility mode for Word 2010, as shown in the screen shot of the Options dialog box below,

the footnotes will start in the right hand column if the first footnote marker in the body of the document is in the right column.

    Dear respected,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Based on the description, we tried to deploy the same environment and we found out that we can reproduce a similar behaviour that adding a footnote will be shown in bottom right which is on the left column but not right column. And also, when you add a second one, it will show bottom in right column, but the footnote line only shows in right side.

In this situation, we may be sorry to convey that this is by designed and kindly share your valuable idea to the product development team so they can hear your voice and improve for a better user experience. How do I give feedback on Microsoft 365? - Microsoft Support

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Mia

In the Footnote and Endnote dialog, you can choose the number of columns for footnotes, so you can have them in two columns or use "Match section layout" to match the number of columns, but, no matter which option you select, the first footnote will always be in the first column, even if the footnote reference in the text is in the second column.
