how to insert page number on word document

Hello, I have off and on issues with the page number insert. Can someone please help?

When I look at the in-app guidance, they are using an older version of word and so the directions are different from what will help me. My page number option is under insert, next to the header option but there is not tabs to hit, it only gives your page placement options that do nothing when I try.

    Oh wow,

    Yeah, now that you mention that I am not paying for Microsoft and the version I use comes to me through my college.

    Lol that is silly, so the free version (which is not free because school is not free) page number insert is wonky and I just have to cross my fingers that it will work for me from time to time.

    Ps: shift + alt + P did nothing for me.

    Are you using Word Online, the version that runs in your web browser? If so, note that it is a version with limited capabilities.

    If you are paying for a Microsoft subscription, you can install the full product on your PC or Mac. It will give you access to more options for headers/footers and page numbering.

    Please look at Page Numbers in Word 2007-2021 (365).

    You can go to a header or footer and click where you want the page number.

    Press Shift+Alt+P and you will have a page number in that header or footer.

    You can format that however you want.

    Everything else is just icing on the cake.

    Thank you, Charles,

    I think I have a newer addition of Word because my insert page number looks like a very simplified version of that.

    I have a Dell laptop and recently uploaded Microsoft 356 and Word
