See if the text has shading applied to it rather than text highlight color.

Select the text. On the Home tab, click the arrow on the border button (in the Paragraph group) and then go to the Shading tab. Choose the No Coor option.

In the Shading dialog, make sure that "Apply to" is set to Text rather than Paragraph.

I'm having the same problem, but I don't have a border button in the paragraph group.

Which specific version of Word are you running?

In Word for Windows, you should see the border icon in the Paragraph group on the Home tab. It is the very last icon in that group.

Click the arrow to see more options. The option to display the full dialog box is at the bottom.

I got it to unshade after selecting each individual word instead of the block of text and then selecting "no shading." Is there any way to report this bug to MS?

You shouldn't have to do each word separately as long as you remember to select the "Text" option (as opposed to "Paragraph") in the Border and Shading dialog box. See previous replies, including screen shots, from Suzanne and me.

Using Ctrl+SpaceBar would be even quicker, assuming of course that the shading isn't part of the style which is applied to the text.

This solution does not work for me, "No Color" is greyed out in the highlighting dialogue and I have "no color" in the Paragraph/shading. It's literally highlighted for ever, unless.... you change the "Style" back to "Normal" and then you might have to reformat the font back to what it was after you make the change.
