Microsoft Office 365 Equation Editor

Hi, I'm using Office 365, specifically Microsoft Word to type equations. I am used to the "_"/"^" shortcuts for subscripts and superscripts, respectively. Suddenly, these shortcuts stopped working. Now, when I type "A_0" for example, it stays this way and does not get converted to the proper format. These shortcuts still work in PowerPoint and Excel. I've tried reinstalling and repairing Office 365, but it still didn't help.

The Conversion ribbon is set to Unicode and the equation is set to show in professional format (not Linear).

can insert subscripts manually from the Equation ribbon tab. The symbol shortcuts (e.g. \alpha, \sum...) work without any issues. Also, using the latest build, the LaTeX conversion doesn't work either. This does not bother me so much at this moment, but these issues may be related.

I've found three similar issues already reported, but the proposed solutions there didn't work for me.

Finally, after 2 months, I found the appropriate solution!! All I had to do was delete all the templates, including the Normal.dotm template from "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates".

Glad everything is back to normal!

This issue has been reported to the Word product team and is being investigated. It always helps, however, to send feedback directly from the program, giving as much detail as possible, with screen shots as needed and a sample file if desired.

    Hello! Mohammad Hossein Izadifard

    Thank you for the reply!

It seems that this need more help with experts. Since I am only for basic troubleshooting for Microsoft 365 Office products, OneDrive, and Outlook. And your issue seems to be out of expertise. You may visit Microsoft Q & A and post the description of your issue.

I hope this helps you and your concern

    Hello! Mohammad Hossein Izadifard

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community

As per checking the shared information that you're experiencing issues with the subscript and superscript shortcuts in Microsoft Word. Just to set your expectation that we can only do basic troubleshooting steps for Microsoft 365 office products, OneDrive, and Outlook.

Allow me to ask some questions:

    • May I know what version and edition of Office installed in your computer?
      • You can open any Office apps
      • Go to File > Accounts - on the right side you can see Product Information
    • May I know how do you access your document? is it by opening a Word application? or Word for the web?
    • May I know if this is happening to all of your documents or just specific files?

Based on the information you've provided, it seems like you've already tried some troubleshooting steps. However, I have a few more suggestions that you can try:

    1. Check if the "AutoCorrect" feature is turned on. Go to "File" > "Options" > "Proofing" > "AutoCorrect Options" and make sure that the "Replace text as you type" option is checked.
    2. Try resetting the Equation Editor settings. Go to "File" > "Options" > "Customize Ribbon" > "Keyboard Shortcuts: Customize" and select "Equation Editor" from the "Categories" list. Then, click on "Reset All" and restart Word.
    3. You can as well turn off add-ins that may have caused the issue. By doing this go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add-ins > Select Go. And disable one by one to isolate the issue.

I hope one of these solutions works for you. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    1. Product Information: Microsoft 365.
    2. I access the documents by opening a Word application.
    3. It's happening to all of my documents, not just one.
    4. As you suggested the "Replace text as you type" option is checked in "File" > "Options" > "Proofing" > "AutoCorrect Options". Still to no avail.
    5. I also tried resetting the Equation Editor settings, didn't help either.
    6. I turned off all of the add-ins. there are no active add-ins running currently. still didn't work.

It's such a weird problem. I've never come across anything like this.

Any other tweaks that could possibly fix it?

    Thank you
