You can't select folders to back up in your personal OneDrive account because this is a work device

Dear all,

I am the owner of a Microsoft 365 family plan and I recently bought a new computer. I installed Windows 11 Education there first. But I got problems connecting my personal OneDrive account and syncing the files. Luckily I still had an old Windows 10 license and was able to switch my windows licensed from Windows 11 education to Windows 11 Pro. I also removed the old education user account and switched to my personal account that I also use for Microsoft 356.

Unfortunately, I still cannot sync my personal folders like documents. I am able to connect to my personal OneDrive. However, the useful syncing of documents, desktop and Pictures is not allowed. The error message is: "You can't select folders to back up in your personal OneDrive account because this is a work device".

I am really frustrated. I already installed so much software, configurated everything and I really don't want to reinstall my whole computer again. I also do not want to buy a new Windows 11 Home license if that is what Microsoft tries to force me to do.

Please can you help me with this annoying error message? I looked online a lot but could only found a handful of people with this specific problem and unfortunately their requests for help were not answered.

Thank you very much in advance,

Peter

I finally solved this problem for my own case. I could find a linkage to my former education account in the Windows settings. As soon as I removed it there, I was allowed to synchronize my folders as I wanted.

I hope that the other users here also find a solution for their problem!

this started to happen to myself also. I do have work accounts, but this never used to be the case. I've always had both on my computer and had personal one-drive sync my folders. This should be something managed at the enterprise level and not a default restriction.

I am also having this problem. It began once I reinstalled windows (reset PC) to wipe files etc, start fresh. I own the company and domain connected to AZURE-AD/ENTRA ID I added the PC to, and regularly signed into both profiles without any syncing or back-up issues.

During the new setup, the business account was added first, then the personal account. But it should not matter, because in either case the device is added to the ENTRA/ID.

In any case I now get this issue:

I will be contacting MS business to see if there is a restriction on the admin end that can be changed.

The problem here is I have plenty of people working for me with BYOD laptops, they have no issues connecting the devices for their work accounts, I don't set major controls that matter to most; but I am certain I cannot have the person OneDrive accounts all up and quit backing up.

    Anyone else having this problem?

I will repost if I can find, or am provided a solution.

    Cheers.

I reset the TPM chip but unfortunately this did not solve my problem.

Can anybody help me and tell me how to correct that wrong info that this is a business device?

    Hello Fuad,

thank you very much for your fast reply and advice to help.

Unfortunately, your recommendations did not change the problem. Could my device be called "business device" because of the TPM chip and its connection to Windows 11? As I wrote earlier, I initially installed Windows Education edition.

    Best regards,

    Peter
