I have been researching for Office tip and some of the special characters like below showed up:

^p for a paragraph mark, ^t for a tab character

However, when I Google for the special characters, not many show the desired list of characters. They only show "trademarked", "copyright" symbol.

Likewise with Excel. there are date format (dd/mm/yyyy), and I know there are more format for number, letter in special forms.

How can I get to know the complete list of the special characters?

In Word, you can use ^p in the Find & Replace dialog box when you search for a paragraph mark (represented by a pilcrow, ¶, if you display nonprinting marks in your documents). See the screen shot below which is from Word for Windows. (Word for Mac will be similar, but not necessarily identical.)

To insert special characters using Word for Windows, use Insert tab > Symbols group > Symbol > More Symbols.

The dialog box has a Special Characters tab which lists characters and their shortcuts. You can assign your own shortcuts if you wish.

    Hi,

I'm Tim, an Independent Advisor here and a Microsoft user like you. I don't work for Microsoft and do not have access to any of your data on their system.

In Microsoft Word, you can find special characters by going to the "Insert" tab, then selecting "Symbol" and "More Symbols." Excel has similar options under the "Insert" tab as well. This will give you access to a wide range of special characters, including paragraph marks, tab characters, and various symbols. You can also use keyboard shortcuts or Unicode values for some characters.

In Excel, you can insert special characters by going to the "Insert" tab, selecting "Symbol," and then choosing "More Symbols." This will open a window where you can browse and select from a variety of special characters, including numbers, letters, and symbols. Additionally, Excel has built-in number formats and functions for displaying dates and other special formats.

I hope this information helps. If you have questions, please let me know and I'll be glad to assist you further or If you find it helpful, you can mark this comment as the answer.

    Kind regards

    Tim

The combinations you cite are the ones used in the Find and Replace dialog. You can get all of these by clicking More>> and then Special in the Replace dialog:

You can experiment to find what each one produces or you can find a list at https://remc1.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/PS/pages/17171364/Special+Characters+for+Find+and+Replace+in+Microsoft+Word

The ones shown here are the general ones. If you check the box for Use wildcards, there will be a different list, as shown at http://www.gmayor.com/replace_using_wildcards.htm

I don't see "symbol" after I go to the insert tab. Only "advanced symbol" where exactly is the "symbol"? Is there a shortcut to be used without hitting the insert tab?

P.S. I'm using MS 360 subscription on Mac

Thank you for your response, Mr. Tim. Turns out the I was misusing the keyword "format character" instead of "format code". Using the right keyword fixed the problem immediately.
