Hi...I have the same problem. I cannot highlight any text in any MS word doc. I can highlight text with any other program so its not the mouse.

I have checked all the settings and not seeing anything is activated to prevent me from highlighting . Please advise ASAP. I have tried calling your help line and its impossible to speak to a person.

    Nick

    Hello Monique V,

I'm Segunfunmi, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thank you for posting your query in this forum.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with selecting text in your document. There could be several reasons why this is happening. Before troubleshooting, I suggest you close and reopen the document to see if that resolves the issue.

If the problem persists, you can try the following solutions:

    • Check your mouse or touchpad: Sometimes, a malfunctioning mouse or touchpad can cause issues with selecting text. Try selecting text in a PDF or webpage to see if it works. You may need to troubleshoot your mouse or touchpad if it doesn't.
    • Check editing permissions: If the file is protected or has restricted editing permissions, you won't be able to select or highlight text. You may need to remove the read-only restriction from the Word document or request editing permissions from the document owner.
    • Turn off Protected View: Microsoft Word has a Protected View feature that sometimes blocks perfectly safe files. If you're confident about the legitimacy of your Word document, you can temporarily turn off the Protected View feature.
    • Avoid running Word in compatibility mode: Compatibility mode is unsuitable for modern-day apps like Microsoft Word. Hence, it's best to ensure Word is not running in compatibility mode.
    • Repair the problematic Word document: If you can't select or highlight text in a specific document, there may be an issue with that Word file. In that case, you can use these steps to repair the Word document.

I hope these suggestions help. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Kind regards, Segunfunmi.

First of all, restart your computer. If the problem remains, please provide us with some details. Which version of Office are you running and under which operating system?
