I had a document open that was quite lengthy. I thought it was automatically saving but I refreshed my computer because it was acting slowly and when it reopened the file was completely gone. I looked in my recent, I checked all of my files, but the document is nowhere to be found. It is a very important document so if you can help please let me know!

    Hi Amamnda,

Use the Menu Bar and choose File > Open Recent > More

You should be able to find your file in the list, and the path to the save location should display under the file name.

    Dear Amanda,

Good day! Thank you for posting your query in our community.

Although not all lost data can be retrieved, we try our best to provide all possible suggestions to help you:

    1. If AutoRecover feature is turn on, you can Recover a file saved by AutoRecover.
    2. If you store your file on local folder but still can’t find the content back from AutoRecovery folder, you can use Time Machineto have a try.
    3. If you use OneDrive, then you can go to OneDrive online and sign in with your account, then check if your document is there. Use version historyto restore a previous version.

If you can't find your file, given this situation, the only way we can think of to troubleshoot the issue is to report the issue to the related Team. So we suggest you open a ticket to see if support there could help you recover the content:

    • If you are using work/school account, you can contact the administrator in your company/school and follow the steps in the article to open a ticket.
    • If you are using personal account, we suggest that you can contact phone support on this page: Contact Microsoft Support.

    Appreciate your understanding.

    Sincerely,

    Jazlyn | Microsoft Community Moderator
