See Moderator's note at bottom of this post.

    Hello, Saba

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community. I am an advisor that can help you with your Microsoft Office concerns. I totally understand that you wanted to change the header of your pages in Microsoft Word. I am more willing to help you with it.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with unlinking headers in Microsoft Word on your Mac. Here's how you can unlink headers from previous sections:

Double-click on the header area of the page where you want to change the header. This action should open the header/footer area for editing.

Look for the option to "Link to Previous" in the header/footer toolbar. This option may appear as a button or checkbox. Click on it to unlink the header/footer from the previous section. If it's already selected, clicking on it should deselect it.

Once the header/footer is unlinked, you can make changes to it without affecting the headers/footers in other sections.

If you have multiple sections with different headers/footers, repeat the above steps for each section where you want to change the header/footer.

After making the desired changes to the header/footer, you can close the header/footer area. Your changes should now be reflected in the document.

If the "Link to Previous" option is not working as expected, you may encounter a formatting issue or a limitation in Word. In such cases, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

Ensure that you're in Print Layout view. Sometimes, certain features may not work as expected in other views. Check if there are any section breaks in your document. Section breaks can affect the behavior of headers/footers. If the issue persists, try restarting Microsoft Word or even your Mac to see if it resolves the problem.

To change the header for each page in Microsoft Word on Mac, you'll need to work with sections and unlink headers. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Place your cursor at the end of the page where you want to start a new header. Go to the "Layout" or "Document Elements" tab in the ribbon at the top, then select "Breaks" and choose "Next Page" under the "Section Breaks" category. Repeat this process for each new section where you want a different header.

Double-click on the header area of the first page in the new section.

Double-click on the header area of each subsequent section, and repeat steps 4 and 5 to unlink the header/footer from the previous section and make changes as needed.

After making the desired changes to the header/footer in each section, you can close the header/footer area by clicking outside of it or by selecting "Close Header and Footer" from the toolbar.

Please let me know if these information answered the concern and helped us to resolve the issue. Give back to the Community. Help the next person who has this issue by indicating if this reply solved your problem. Click Yes or No below.

Although this is marked as an answer, the advice given will virtually never be what is needed. You do not want a separate section for every page or for most pages. Although useful, section breaks add a lot of overhead to a document.

The StyleRef field will almost always fulfill any need to create different headers or footers on different pages. See the posts below.

If text from the page, for example the current "instance" of a particular heading level, should be repeated in the header (or footer) this is best done by inserting a STYLEREF field in the header (or footer), as Charles has suggested in his reply.

We all know how it's supposed to work .

    If only it did.

Is anyone willing to admit there is a bug in Mac and it doesn't work?

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

The post marked as an answer is not a good answer.

You can use the StyleRef Field to reflect content from the page in the header or footer. This is available in both the Windows and Mac desktop applications.

The posted question says: "the button link to previous pages in header part is never on to deselect." I see the same. In the Ribbon, [Link to Previous] is gray. In the Header or Footer, [Same as Previous] does nothing when clicked.

I don't understand how StyleRef will help. I have read the two articles linked to above. They appear to allow some item from the page to be repeated in the footer for that page. Then of course, that might be different on different pages.

But the StyleRef suggestion is not a response to the question.

The question is this: How to turn off Link to Previous?

Is someone reading this who will give Microsoft's answer to that question?

    [Microsoft® Word for Mac - Home & Business 2021 - Version 16.85.2 (24052614)]

(In my case, in different sections I want different Word fields or different constant text in the headers or footers. A perfectly ordinary Word function, which has been available for many, many years. Decades. And a function that appears on Ribbon>Header & Footer. Except that Link to Previous can not be turned off.)

Thank you, Moderators, for your work!
