How to disable the "New Comment" option in Microsoft Word 2021?

Hello Community,

When we right click anywhere in the Microsoft Word 2021 application, it displays a list of options and the last option available there is "New Comment" (see screenshots below). To disable that option, I've already tried a few Microsoft KBs that asks to try: File > Options > General > Search for and turn off the “Enable modern comments” checkbox. However, in my case, there's no "Enable modern comments" option available.

The "New Comment" option is actually useless for me. For instance if I want to use the option "Table Properties..." (which is the second last option when you hit right click) to edit a table, I most of the times hit a mice click on the "New Comment" option, which is unwanted. Can you please help me remove or disable the "New Comment" option?

Version: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021

OS: Windows 11 Pro

Right click options:

There's no "Enable modern comments" option in File > Options > General:

Microsoft 365 and Office | Word | For business | Windows

In that version, your comments should be in the Markup area, like this:

Is this not what you are seeing?

It is Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021

    Microsoft® Word 2021 MSO (Version 2402 Build 16.0.17328.20124) 64-bit

Thanks for an explanation, Stefan. As you said "New comments are supported in subscription versions of Office, and not in perpetual licenses such as Office 2021.", I have a perpetual license (of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021) and not a subscription based license (which is available of Office 365). In that case, why I still have that "New Comment" option? In fact, on my office PC, I've Office 365 installed and that doesn't have the "New Comment" option. Can you help understand it again?

The "Enable modern comments" option is only temporary, according to Microsoft. It will be removed in the future.

Which specific release / version number of Office do you have? Are you perhaps running a preview version (from the Insider program)?

New comments are supported in subscription versions of Office, and not in perpetual licenses such as Office 2021.

See an example of the modern comments interface below; the screen shot is from the Word version which is included in Microsoft 365 apps for business.

In a version that supports modern comments, you would see "Enable modern comments" in the Options dialog box:

There have been some reports in the forums stating that you may sometimes see the modern comments in a perpetual license, if you have had a subscription installed on the computer. The option to turn modern comments on or off does not seem to be present, though.
