When we click on the PDF file in the SharePoint, Is it possible to preview the PDFs in the SharePoint or open in Adobe instead of opening in the browser. Because we would like to restrict the users to download the documents, but we would like to give the view access to the users.

    Dear Changal Rayudu,

Thanks for writing back and updating with us.

As per the further updates, I am sorry to convey that the attachments added in the SharePoint Online List item will be directly opened in the browser and it can’t be previewed because the attachment added to the item will be added as the URL, where opening the URL can’t be previewed and it can be only accessed in the browser.

I agree with you having the open the attachments in the List item as preview instead of opening in the browser in the SharePoint Online will benefit the users and I suggest you to add your valuable idea as feedback in the SharePoint · Community (microsoft.com) which is the best place to share our ideas and improve the Microsoft products.

Appreciate your patience with us and have a wonderful day!!

    Best Regards,

    Sophia

Firstly, thanks for replying to query. My requirement is to open only in a preview mode in SharePoint online. I have attachments in the SharePoint online list. When a user clicks on it, It is opening in the browser. But I need to open only in SharePoint as preview style. Just like Document library. Is it possible to open the attachments in the list as preview just like in the document library.

    Dear Changal Rayudu,

    Good day!!

Apologies for the inconvenience caused and please don’t worry, let’s work together on your concern and move towards a resolution path.

I understand your concern and to my knowledge, I would like to convey that when you click on the name of the PDF file stored in the SharePoint Online Document Library, the respective PDF file will be opened as preview in the SharePoint Online and to open the PDF files directly in the browser or related application, we need to right-click on the PDF file> Open> click on Open in browser or Open in app as per the requirement.

So, even the users with view access who won’t be able to download the content will be able to open the PDF files as preview only when they click on the file name of the PDF.

In addition, even when the option “Open in the client application” is set as default opening method in the Advanced Library Settings of the Library in the SharePoint Online, the non-Office files will be previewed and won’t be able to open them in the respective the PDF application.

For example, clicking on the PDF file in the Library will be opened as preview only in the SharePoint Online:

Our sincere apologies if there is any misunderstanding from our end, we request you to share the more details which will help us to better understand and guide you further.

Appreciate your patience and understanding. Have a great day!!

    Best Regards,

    Sophia
