this is a read only doc. Click 'duplicate' to make changes.

Split from this thread.

This doesn't work on my MacBook. It is a 'compatibility' issue. Sometimes when I open the doc it will give me a yellow banner at the top saying something like 'this is a read only doc. Click 'duplicate' to make changes. However when I restarted Word and opened this doc it didn't give me that option. I need to know how I can convert these documents from 'read only'.

Thanks

    Hi Aaron:

Sorry but we're getting frustrated too, because we are not getting sufficient detail (about what you are using and what you are doing) to be able to answer the question.

The message in question appears when the document exists in a location or file format to which it cannot be saved if it is changed.

Previously, Word would allow changes to such a document, which would then be lost when the user closed the document because Word could not write to wherever the document was. Now it warns you, and won't allow changes until you first save the document somewhere to which you have write permission.

Usually, the yellow notice means that the document has been opened from within an email program, or that the document is in a format (e.g. PDF...) that Word can read but not save, or that the property Read Only Recommended has been set on the file, or that the file has been password=protected from changes by the author.

To definitively answer your question, we need to know where the file is (on your MacBook, yes, but WHERE?) and how you opened it (the keystrokes you used...).

    Cheers

Then the file's location could be triggering this message. If you save to your Mac OS Documents folder or Desktop do you still get the message?

This message is expected whenever you open a document that is an email attachment. Email attachments can't be modified,. Word is trying to tell you that if you want to make changes to the file, you'll have to save it somewhere else or your changes will be lost.
