Microsoft AutoUpdate (Install In Progress) is stuck on MacBook Pro. Force quite doesn't help and I can't restart my MacBook.

Hi,

I have an Apple MacBook Pro (2021) running on the Apple M1 Pro chip. I was trying to restart my MacBook and then the 'Install in Progress' window popped up. I wasn't even aware this was running in the background. I have tried the following steps but nothing seems to work.

  1. I tried to Force Quit the app. It does quit but when I try to restart my MBP the Install in Progress reappears and won't allow me to restart.
  2. I searched for resolution on here and one of them was to open a MS app (I opened Word), went to Help>Check for Updates and from there look for the Install in Progress app and move to bin, but I can't move that to the bin.
  3. I even went to Activity Monitor and tried to quit the 'Microsoft AutoUpdate' but I can't seem to do that.

I am just stuck and can't restart my MBP at all. Can anyone help pls!!

Thanks,

Suraj

    Hi Kiki,

I hope you read my post. I am not looking for 'How to force quit', I know how to do that. I force quit the app, try to restart my MacBook and the 'Install in Progress' appears again and is always stuck at a particular point. Pls check screen grab for reference.

I did not even initiate any updates so not sure where this popped up from.

    Thanks

    Hi  Suraj Garg,

    Thank you for your reply.

Can you try to uninstall Microsoft AutoUpdate by following my steps below and then install the latest Microsoft AutoUpdate version 4.66 again and see the result.

    1. Open an Office application (e.g. Word) and click Help menu > Check for Updates to open Microsoft AutoUpdate first.
    2. Right-click Microsoft AutoUpdate in the Dock and click Options > Show in Finder.
    3. Right-click the Microsoft AutoUpdate file and click Move to Wastebasket to uninstall it. (Note: You will need to quit Microsoft AutoUpdate before you can uninstall it.
    4. Alternatively, you can find the Microsoft AutoUpdate file at the following link: /Resources/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0
    5. Install the latest version of Microsoft AutoUpdate 4.66 via this link: Download Microsoft AutoUpdate 4.66 Package
    6. Restart your Mac and run the test to see the results.

You can also open the Finder. Press Command +Shift+h. Go to Library > Privilleged Helper Tools and make sure com.microsoft.autoupdate.helpertool is present. Run Microsoft Auto Update. If the file does not exist, use the link below to re-download Microsoft AutoUpdate.

You mentioned that you were unable to move the “installing” application to the recycle bin, did an error message appear? Or is it just that nothing happens when you mouse click on it?

You can uninstall all of Office first to see the effect. You can refer to the following link for the specific uninstallation steps, and then you can install it back again after recovering normally.
