Document ID link not working

Hi,

I enabled the Document IDs on SharePoint to ensure that links to files/documents are not broken even after renaming/relocating. I followed the Microsoft Guide available online to do so. The Document IDs are visible. When I tried to rename a file and use the document ID, it gave me 404 error. The same error occurred when I moved the file from one folder to another (on the same SharePoint site).

Please advise on how to solve this issue.

    Hi respected Antariksh Anil KUDAL,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and sharing updates with us and I really appreciate your effort and your precious time doing.

And I appreciate your kind words.

Regarding ro your follow-up question, I'm sorry and I'm afraid, here are no specific Document ID settings that control the behavior of opening files versus downloading them. The Document ID simply provides a persistent URL to the document.

However, you can configure Document IDs in SharePoint to navigate to the document location rather than downloading the file directly. By default, clicking on a Document ID link should open the document in the browser or prompt you to open it, depending on the SharePoint library settings for example via go to the document library settings and check the "Advanced settings" for the library.

Also, if you find our information helpful, you can also use the feedback tool below our reply to submit your feedback for us (pictured below), which will definitely help others in the community who are experiencing similar problems to find solutions to their problems more quickly.

    Dear respected Antariksh Anil KUDAL,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

I’m sorry you’re having a problem but based on your description we can work together to resolve it.

For the situation you encountered, we deeply understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

As per your description, may I know does that error message occur when you add document ID column and create a new document named “test1”, it shows a document and when change the file name to “test1123” and click the Document ID link again, it shows the error 404 Not Found?

Based on test, I tested on my end and I saw the same 404 error after renaming the file, but it was temporary, the link started working again in a while. But this is only for few minutes. If we click the link again after few minutes (probably 3-4 minutes) later, the document opens and will not show the error anymore. I suppose SharePoint takes some time to process the request at the backend.

I tested with multiple files and all showed the same result. Since it worked for me after few minutes, could you please check again on your end to confirm if it is working for you?

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I'm sorry and I apologize for that.

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad

    Hi respected Antariksh Anil KUDAL,

    I appreciate your kind words.

The pdf file format link also started working again after few minutes. May I know did you close the PDF file and after some minutes open again and got the same error message.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad

    Hi,

    Thanks for all the support.

I am facing another issue. The document ID feature only works for word, PPT and excel files. If I try renaming / relocating a PDF, it gives 404 Not Found. Can you please advise?

Thanks a lot for the support. It solves the problem and the Document ID's work.

    I have a follow-up question regarding this:

The document ID directly downloads the file to the system. Is there any way to use the Document ID to navigate to the SharePoint location rather than downloading it?
