Word 2019 - some items missing from Insert tab

I searched for instructions regarding Headers but all of them refer to using items which aren't present in my copy of Word 2019, specifically options like "different first page" and similar. They aren't present in the Customise Ribbon list, so how can I instate them? Many thanks.

You have the same options. It is just that the ribbon has resized itself to accommodate a smaller screen (or a smaller Word window).

For example, in your screen shot, the Options group is collapsed into a drop down menu. Similarly, the Header (and Footer) options display with smaller icons.

For illustration, I am including a screen shot of your previous reply below.

    Thanks for the follow-up.

Note that for accessing the options for "Different first page" and "Different odd and even" headers/footers, you don't need the Insert tab. Just activate the header/footer view by double-clicking the header area, as Charles suggested.

Of course, there are other commands on the Header drop down that may be useful to you.

The screen shot below illustrates how several header and footer related commands are available from the Header & Footer contextual ribbon tab.

Simply right click in the Header (or footer) area of the page and then left click on Edit Header (Edit Footer)

to display the Header & Footer tab of the ribbon

As Charles said, to activate the header/footer, just double-click the header area.

If the ribbon isn't set to display automatically in your installation of Word, additional steps are indeed required to show the options for headers and footers.

Note that if you are using the browser version of Word, there is a separate Options drop down on the right hand side of the document. The example below is not from an English version of Word on the web, but the same principles apply:

These commands appear when you are in the header/footer for editing.

Double-click in the header area and you should get the context Header/Footer tab. You can also, in the Insert Tab in the Header/Footer area choose Edit Header.
