Excel: Auto Fill Options Box not disappearing

This question was asked before but cancelled by the OP. I've had this problem for a while - possibly since the last update. In Excel, when creating a list and extending it, the "Auto Fill Options" box appears. The problem is that it doesn't go away unless I start a new list and extend it or close the workbook.

This behavior could potentially be a bug, particularly if it started occurring after an update.

    Nonsense!

The behavior is normal, by design and the same since years.

After you filled a list down, regardless if you used AutoFill options or not, press F2 to edit a cell, immediately press ENTER to finish the edit and it disappears.

    Andreas.

Thank you for the quick reply. It took a while, but I tried all of these options - no change, though. :(

Hi I’m a Microsoft user like yourself and I will try to help you as best as I can today.

The issue you're experiencing in Excel where the "Auto Fill Options" box remains visible and does not disappear as expected can be quite frustrating. This behavior could potentially be a bug, particularly if it started occurring after an update.

Software Updates: First, ensure that your version of Excel is up to date. Microsoft frequently releases updates that fix known bugs and improve functionality. You can check for updates in Excel by going to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

Restart Excel: Sometimes, simply restarting Excel can resolve odd behavior like persistent UI elements. If you haven't already, try closing Excel completely and reopening it.

Check Excel Options: Sometimes settings within Excel can affect how certain features behave. While there isn’t a specific setting for the Auto Fill Options box's persistence, resetting all settings to default might help: Go to File > Options. In the Excel Options dialog, consider resetting all preferences to default, or explore specific areas related to advanced editing options.

Use Keyboard Shortcuts: If the box remains on the screen, sometimes using a keyboard shortcut can help clear it. Try pressing Esc to see if it dismisses the Auto Fill Options box.

Disable Add-Ins: Occasionally, add-ins can interfere with Excel's normal operations. Try disabling any active add-ins to see if that resolves the issue: Go to File > Options > Add-Ins. At the bottom of the window, manage COM Add-ins and uncheck any that are active, then test if the problem persists.

Excel Repair: If the issue is still not resolved, consider running a repair on your Office installation. This can fix problems that are not solved by updates or simple restarts: Go to the Control Panel on your computer. Select Programs and Features. Find your Microsoft Office installation in the list, click on it, and then select Change at the top of the window. Choose Quick Repair or Online Repair and follow the prompts.

Create a New Excel Profile: If none of the above solutions work, try creating a new profile for Excel. This can sometimes resolve issues caused by corrupted user profiles.

Feedback to Microsoft: If this seems to be a new bug introduced by an update, consider providing feedback directly to Microsoft through the Excel Feedback tool found under File > Feedback.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any questions. Microsoft Support is available for further assistance if the issue persists.

    Best Regards Deeksha
