Can Not Open Excel Files in one drive in a new tab

I have been using one drive for quite a while to share excel file.

Until recently, when I would click on the Excel file, it would automatically open in a new tab. I really liked this and this is how I want it to function.

All of a sudden when I go to open any of the excel files I have in One Drive, they will only open in the current tab. This is not what I want as it makes the task I am doing more tedious and take longer.

Why can't I get the Excel files to open in a new tab anymore?

I have tried holding Ctrl and clicking, and this did not change anything, right or left clicking. When I right click, there is no option to open file in new tab.

Again, it used to automatically do this and now I can not seem to get it to open in a new tab no matter what I do.

Please help!!!

This is literally the same advice that the previous community member gave me and I responded does not work.

Has Microsoft made an update that no longer enables being able to open the file in a new tab? Again, until about a week ago, it was the default that when I clicked on a file it automatically opened in a new tab.

Now, even your work around (which is exactly the same instructions a previous community member gave), I still can not make the files in one drive open in a new tab, only in the current tab.

It is doing the same thing whether I use chrome of edge.

What did Microsoft break and how do we get it fixed?

It should be pretty simple to get the file to open in a new tab.

I replied to you with all of the information you requested, and also let you know your first proposed "solution" did not work at all.

Were you going to follow up? This is still a major problem for me

Hi Karsh, My name is Umar and I'd be happy to help you out with your question.

Please note: This is a user-to-user community forum. We are users just like you who help others. We are not employees of Microsoft.

I understand your frustration with the recent change in how Excel files open in OneDrive. There isn't a direct way to open Excel files in a new tab within OneDrive itself, but here are a couple of workarounds you can try:

Try to open in Excel Online:

    1. Right-click on the desired Excel file in OneDrive.
    2. Instead of left-clicking to open, choose "Open in > Word Online" (This might say "Excel Online" depending on your settings). This will open the file in a new tab within your web browser, allowing you to work on it without affecting your current tab.

Also, try clearing your browser cache and cookies, or even use a different browser to see if the issue persists.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    I am using Google Chrome.

I have made no changes, and neither has the other owners of the shared drive to our knowledge.

We use OneDrive to share files.

I am using Excel, this is a spreadsheet, not a word document.

That said, when I right click and pick "open in excel online", it still opens the file in the current tab, not in a new tab.
