OTF Font Embedding not working for Word/Excel

So my basic problem is embedding of a font into a Word, Excel and PowerPoint template.

PowerPoint template works, I can open it online, on another machine without the font, wherever, it opens and is there displayed correctly.

Word and Excel... not so much. The font names show correctly in the font selector drop down, but they display as Arial and Arial Bold. On a system with the fonts installed, no problem with online or desktop, but on a system without the fonts installed, no go.

The actual font names are: Bebas Neue Pro, Bebas Neue Pro Medium. Links are at the bottom for reference. Documents created from the templates are also linked above the font links. Just for reference, the powerpoint is there too even tho it works.

Here's answers to questions I know will be asked:

  • Is the font embeddable? YES, the font shows as "Installable" in the fonts panel
  • Is the font actually embedded into the document? YES, when extracted like a zip file, the font files and their names are there
  • Is Preserve fidelity when sharing this document have "Embed fonts" checked? YES it is, also unchecked save space option
  • Are there document permissions on the file that would block the font loading? NO, ACL security is everyone full control

If anyone has more suggestions, please help thanks in advance! The documents are nothing special. Heading should be Bebas Neue Pro**. Body** should be Bebas Neue Pro Middle**.**

OpenType fonts have 2 flavors: PostScript and TrueType. Bebas Neue is PostScript flavor. Office works better with TrueType flavor. You can contact MyFonts to ask for a TrueType version. Or you can contact Ryoichi Tsunekawa, the typographer, to see if a TrueType edition is available.

    Cliff,

I suspect it is the font as well, I did find another user who had this exact issue using this exact font on another thread last year.

I can attempt using an open source font I know will not be on my system, and can try from there using this same process to test if it will work using an installable (or at least editable) font.

Thanks for attempting with the Bebas fonts. Will update later once I work on open source fonts.

    Dear Darrell,

Thanks for providing the additional information and the files in the private message.

From the information "As an alternative, we created a share for Workgroup Templates and used GPO to populate template location to all domain users. ", it seems that you have used the way John mentioned in How can i enable embed fonts in the file via GPO for all user of the - Microsoft Community.

As you mentioned that it never worked in your environment, I'm wondering whether the issue may also be related to the fonts.

As you are using a third-party font, sorry for that we may have limited resources on testing with it.

If you have also tested with some open source fonts, welcome to provide them for us at your convenient. If you can provide, you can upload the font package in the private message.

We'll also test with some other fonts to do a further test at our side.

Thank you for your effort and understanding.

    Sincerely

    Hi,

Yes, the google file links are from a personal account I have full control of, with security set to most permissive: being public, anyone with link, edit. Not sure why those don't come through but I'll share through DM. Thanks.

Did the issue occur suddenly? I would say NO not suddenly, it has never worked. The fonts were just purchased and put into use via GPO, but we could not get GPO to force Word, Excel or PowerPoint to default to embedding the fonts. As an alternative, we created a share for Workgroup Templates and used GPO to populate template location to all domain users. Then we added base templates which already had the fonts embedded using the Save/PreserveFidelity/EmbedFonts check. I tested the template to make sure it extracted with the fonts, and the font files were there along with being in the fontslist.xml also. Got same result with the created document using extract method. The documents I tried to link were created from these templates. I will attach both the created document and the template when replying to the DM, in case it is a template issue.

As an alternate option/solution --- Is there a way that we missed to get GPO to default embed the fonts we're deploying?

The initial conditions were created on a system with fonts installed, and testing was done
on a non-domain joined system without the fonts installed.
