The paragraph at the end of which you have pressed Enter probably has some Spacing After. This is true for the Normal style in recent versions of Word:

Set the After spacing to 0 pt (and choose Single spacing instead of 1.08 if desired)--not just for the current paragraph but by modifying the style. If you want this to be the default for new documents, select that radio button.

A shortcut way to do this is to select the Manage Styles button in the Styles pane (third from the left at the bottom of the pane), choose the Set Defaults tab, and change the paragraph spacing there, selecting the radio button for "New documents based on this template."

    Hello Gary.

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

It sounds like there might be an issue with the paragraph settings in your Word document. First of all, I want to confirm does this issue occur in all Word files? Or just a specific file.

If this error occurs in all files, here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Show Formatting Marks: Press the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Home tab to reveal formatting marks. This will help you see if there are any extra spaces or paragraph marks that might be causing the issue.
    2. Check Paragraph Settings: Right-click on the text and select Paragraph. Under Indents and Spacing, ensure that ‘Before’ and ‘After’ spacing is set to 0, and ‘Line spacing’ is set to Single.
    3. Remove Extra Breaks: If you see any section breaks that shouldn’t be there, you can delete them.
    4. Use Shift + Enter: If you want to start a new line without starting a new paragraph, use Shift + Enter instead of just Enter.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, it might be helpful to reset the Word settings to default or consult the Microsoft support community for more specific advice. Remember to save your document before making changes to avoid losing any work.

OTOH, if your issue only occurs in a specific file, you can also send the file to us for a check if there's no private information inside.
