How do I take a custom Excel table style and add it to the default Excel table styles, to be available to all new workbooks?

When I click More from Format as Table, I want to see my custom table styles listed as "Custom" for all new sheets and workbooks.

Is there a way to rename "Custom" from the More choice from Format as Table?

    Sure, here are the steps to add a custom Excel table style to the default styles and rename it:

    1. Create a new blank workbook.
    2. Copy and paste a table with the custom style applied into the new workbook.
    3. Inside the Table Styles menu, right-click and set the custom style as the default style.
    4. Save the workbook to a known location as an Excel template with the name "book" and the extension "xlxt".
    5. In Excel, navigate to Options in the File menu. Then visit the Advanced area, and, under General, near the bottom, you'll see an option for startup files, with a box to specify a path. Paste the path to your templates directory here.

    To rename a custom table style:

    1. Go to the “Design” tab, right-click on the custom style in the Table Styles gallery, and select “Modify Table Style”.
    2. In the Modify Table Style dialog box, edit the name and click “OK” to save the changes.

    ...is the extension supposed to be .xltx ?

    It seems like Excel is trying to open Word templates, which is causing the error. Here are a few suggestions that might help:

    1. Separate Templates: Consider storing your Excel and Word templates in separate folders. This can prevent Excel from trying to open Word templates.
    2. Check Disabled Files: If Excel or Word had issues opening a file previously, it might have added the file to its list of disabled files. You can check this list and remove any files that shouldn't be there. Here's how:
    • In Excel or Word, click the File tab.
    • Click Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.

    Thank you, Utkarsh, for your prompt reply.

    Your suggestion worked. However, when I open Excel, all of my custom Word templates, which are stored in the same Custom Office Templates folder, try to open. I get errors that say the Word templates are invalid. (Of course, Word documents cannot be opened in Excel.)

    When I open Word, the new Excel template does not try to open; it only opens on the reverse.

    Any suggestions?
