First, start by creating a custom template set up the way you want and create new documents from that template if you want that layout. That is the simplest thing to do.
If you are talking about Word styles and not page layout, consider saving and applying a [Quick] Style Set.

To apply the page layout from a template to an existing document, the best method is to create a new document based on the template and paste the text from the existing document into the new document.
