It's not up to Microsoft to make their software work with every possible cloud service. They developed OneDrive to ensure there would be a cloud service that works properly with Office, which was created long before there was the cloud, or even the internet.
What could work is if Google were to change the way Google Drive works so that Office files can safely be edited on it. DropBox has done that for Office for Windows. Here's the Google Drive support page, where you may be able to make such a suggestion.
When you place files in PowerPoint, by default, they are embedded, not linked. So there is no link to view, no picture name that is stored in the PowerPoint file.
If you must use Google Drive, it's probably better for you to use Google Docs instead of Microsoft Office. They're built to work well together.
