You do not want to type a number, you need to insert a field.

See Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP.

Shift+Alt+P inserts a page number field.

How are you trying to add your page numbers?

Note that for Word to properly create the numbering sequence, you have to insert a page number field in your header or footer.

You haven't told us which version of Word you are running. In Word for Windows, you can activate the header/footer view by double-clicking the header. Since you have different odd and even headers (footers), you will have to insert the page number twice: first in the odd page header (or footer) and then in the even page header (or footer). On the Header & Footer tab, click Page Number (in the Header & Footer group) and then click Current Position. Or you can make use of the Alt+Shift+P shortcut.

    Hello,

Greetings! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Per your description, it seems that you are experiencing issue with page numbers changing across different pages in Microsoft Word.

May I know if my understanding of the scenario is right?

If yes, and if you are using Word on Windows computer, you may try following steps:

    • Open your Word document and go to the section where you want to change the page numbering.
    • Click on the "Insert" tab in the menu bar.
    • In the "Header & Footer" section, click on the "Page Number" drop-down menu and select "Format Page Numbers."
    • In the "Page Number Format" dialog box, select the "Start at" option and enter the desired starting page number for that section. For example, if you want that section to start with page number 1, enter "1" in the box.
    • Click "OK" to apply the changes.
    • Repeat these steps for each section where you want to change the page numbering.

If this issue only occurs in a specific document, you may also create a new document and then copy the original content and paste it into the new document, see if it works or not.

If issue still happens, I understand how frustrating this situation can be and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. To further troubleshoot the issue, I would appreciate if you could share following information:

1.Does this issue happen in different documents?

2.Are you using Windows computer? What is the version of your Word App? Please go to File>Account, then capture a full screenshot of Product Information from the Account page.

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Tina | Microsoft Community Moderator
