How do I fix Microsoft word on my MacBook Pro?

(Taking you back 9 months ago) I tried to save my law assignment on Microsoft word but also tried to close it before it saved. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked since; it won’t close, open, update, quit… I’m extremely stuck on what to do, I’ve tried but I can’t fix it (I’m also getting quite frustrated since I’ve lost months of exam work). The only thing that is showing on my screen is a small tab saying ‘closing law assignment’ with a grey bar going side to side. I can’t even log out of my laptop because it won’t close or ‘quit’. Any advice or ideas on how to try to fix is will be greatly appreciated because I’m beyond lost on what to do 🙂

    Hi Florence,

If you take Linn.L's advice and either force quit Word or shut your Mac down, the next time you open Word, it will attempt to recover your document. Allow Word to do so then use File > Save As and save the recovered file.

    Dear Florence

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Hi, I'm Linn and I'll do what I can to help you with the problems you're having.

You mentioned that you had problems saving your legal assignments on your Mac, and Word got stuck. I found some similar users who had similar experiences, and it seems that this is not an isolated problem.

Before I start to provide you with a fix, I need to ask you for some necessary information:

    1. Did the problem happen suddenly or did it happen after you made any changes to Office or your Mac system?
    2. Does the problem happen to all Office applications? For example: Excel, PowerPoint.
    3. What is your system version and the version of the Word application that has the problem?

I suggest you try some preliminary troubleshooting solutions below:

    • Force quit Word: Please refer to: How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support.
    • Enter Word in Mac safe mode: Shut down your Mac. Press and hold the Power button until you see the Startup Options window. Select the startup disk. Press and hold the Shift key, and then click Continue in Safe Mode. Release the Shift key. Log in with your account credentials. Disclaimer: Microsoft makes no warranties and/or guarantees, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you obtain from third-party linked websites or any technical-related support.
    • Check for updates: Sometimes software problems may be caused by the operating system not being updated to the latest version. Please visit "Software Update" in "System Preferences" to ensure that your software version is up to date.

Please understand that our initial response may not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution. Being patient will be a factor in eventually solving the problem.

    Sincerest greetings

    Linn |Microsoft Community Support Specialist
