Mac Excel Shortcuts not working

Anonymous

Hello,

I'm a Mac user and I've been using keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl + Shift + N/M to add / remove decimals points, Ctrl + Shift + D to add and remove dollar signs, and Ctrl + Shift + L to change font colors. However, these shortcuts suddenly stopped working this morning. Now, when I try to use the same shortcuts, nothing happens.

I've checked if my Excel needs updating. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, it shows I have the latest Sep 30, 2023 version of Excel. I've also updated my computer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

What is this source of this list? None of them are standard Excel shortcuts, others are are the defaults for actions which differ from those in that list, & some are assigned to actions for which standard keystrokes cannot be directly assigned. The Shift+Control+____ modifier combination is the default for shortcuts assigned to macros.

All of that suggests that you have some sort of add-in installed. There may be a compatibility issue with the newer versions of Excel.

Another consideration is whether you are using the Excel Online web app rather than the installed desktop software. Those shortcuts won't work in the web app.

    Hi,Microsoft Mac user_672

We note that you have clicked No Help on the previous reply, and understand that the content of the previous reply did not help you. Our goal is to ensure that you receive effective help and support until your issue is resolved.

As Bob Jones AKA: CyberTaz pointed out, the shortcut you described was not found in the relevant support article. Therefore, in order to further diagnose and resolve your issue, we need to confirm some additional information with you:

    • Are the shortcuts you mention custom set by you? Do you have any third-party input methods installed and in use? Sometimes these input methods may interfere with the normal use of the shortcuts.
    • What is the source of the shortcut screenshot you provided in your reply?

We would like to know more about this through your reply. Your feedback is important to us and will help us provide more specific guidance and solutions.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to help you resolve your issue soon.

    Hi,

    Thank you for the response!

My Mac OS version is 14.5 (23F79). my Excel version is 16.86 (24060916).

I've tried re-installing the app. All my Ctrl + Shift shortcuts don't work.

If this is helpful for context: I'm using Excel for financial modeling and the following keyboard shortcuts below used to work just a few days ago: But they no longer work anymore.

    Thanks for all the help!

The release date you cited is not an indication of version. Please provide the actual Version Numbers for macOS & Office as shown inn:

    • macOS: **> About This Mac**
    • Mac Office: Excel> About Microsoft Excel

I'm not seeing any of the shortcuts you listed for Mac or Windows in the Microsoft Support page. Is it possible that these were custom shortcuts?

    Hi,Microsoft Mac user_672

Thank you for consulting the Microsoft community and reporting your issue.

We understand that you have recently experienced an issue with Excel shortcuts not working. This does affect your productivity, we understand the inconvenience and will do our best to assist you.

In order to further diagnose the issue, we need to confirm with you:

    • Are these specific shortcuts the only ones that are not working, or are other shortcuts also experiencing this issue?
    • Are the shortcuts in specific files not working, or are these shortcuts not working for all files? This helps us to troubleshoot whether it is a file issue or an application issue.

I see the version information on the test machine as shown below, so I suggest you can check again if there is a version that can be updated and try to update to the latest version to check.

In the meantime, try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

    1-Check the System Preferences:

On Mac, sometimes the keyboard shortcut settings in System Preferences may affect the Excel shortcut function. You can go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts to make sure there are no settings that conflict with Excel.

    2-Restart the Excel application:

Sometimes simply closing and reopening Excel can restore the normal functionality of keyboard shortcuts.

3-Check Excel's language and regional settings:

Make sure that Excel's language settings are the same as the language you are used to operating in, and check that the regional settings are correct.

If the above methods fail to solve the problem, you can try the following further actions:

    1) Reset Excel Preferences

Sometimes resetting Excel's preferences can fix strange behavior in the program.

    • Go to the desktop, mouse click down to the desktop, click go to at the top of the screen hold down the option key and select Resource Library (this is the hidden folder, only hold down the option key on the keyboard will be shown in go to)
    • Go to the Containers folder and delete the following files com.microsoft.excel

    2) Reinstall the Excel application

If the problem persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Excel application to see the problem. Click here for the detailed steps.

Please note that before performing a reset or deletion, it is recommended that you back up your files to prevent accidental loss.

We understand the importance of shortcuts for productivity and appreciate your patience and understanding. We look forward to helping you solve your problem as soon as possible.

We look forward to your updates.

    Best wishes.
