How can I add alternate text to equations in Word?

Using Microsoft 365 Word, desktop version.

I want my students to be able to see how to say each equation by accessing the alternate text, i.e., if it says "100%" I want them to be able to hover and see "one hundred percent".

I do not want to save as a .doc or .html and try to clean up the low-res mess it makes of hundreds of equations - tried that and it mucked the whole thing up.

I will eventually be saving as a PDF which is how students will receive it.

Is it possible to convert ALL equations in a document to images and then manually add the desired alternate texts? If so, how?
