Tables horizontal alignment and Table Properties dialog box weirdness

Here's a doozy.

Opened Word, found two consecutive tables were horizontally misaligned, opened Table Properties for the second one, found the Indent from Left option greyed out. The Preferred Width option was selected, so I deselected it and all of a sudden the table shifted left to the margin! And the Indent from Left option became active again.

I could then move the table horizontally.

Please explain.

PS In the Table Properties dialog box there's a Positioning button which is always greyed out. I've never seen it active. Why?

PPS The two Borders and Shading and Options buttons below that Positioning button have the same grey background as the inactive button, and therefore look inactive. Who's the bright spark that thought up that idea?

    Hi Claude,

Per my understanding, the settings you mentioned are as follows:

If you set Alignment as Left, Indent from left is enabled and you can set the exact indentation distance you want.

If you set Text wrapping as Around, Positioning in enabled and you can set text wrapping to more precise by this setting.

Borders and Shading & Options button shall be available.

See this article for Table Properties: Set or change table properties - Microsoft Support
