I have an updated MAC. SONOMA 14.6.1.

Microsoft is forcing me to save on One Drive, its surprise new default. I do not want to use it. I want to save to word documents  (where all my other docs are saved, and to  iCloud On .

A thread here that, I have lost says to use steps that are greyed out on MACS. ARGH!Thank you, Gayle

This is a software design issue which cannot be changed at the user level. Go to Help> Feedback in the menu bar & submit your comments to Microsoft. You won't get a personal reply & don't expect an immediate change but responsible Feedback is taken seriously. The greater the demand from users the more likely the matter will be addressed.

A word of advice: Do not edit Office documents stored on iCloud or any cloud server other than OneDrive/SharePoint. Those devices are not designed to meet the requirements of Office document files. You may be able to get away with it for a while but sooner or later you will lose content and/or incur file corruption.

Move the files to the local drive for editing then move them back once they are saved & closed. The clouds are fine for storage, just not for editing.

OneDrive is not a backup, it’s a cloud location of your data.

The default installation of Office 365 and its OneDrive component uploads all the contents of the PC  \My Documents\ folders to OneDrive, (syncs) and there will be a OneDrive folder in File Explorer containing cached copy of all the OneDrive content. And in Word etc the default Save location is set to OneDrive.

No Docs/data is stored on the local PC

You cannot remove OneDrive on a retail O365

If you dont wish to use OneDrive there are numerous settings that need to be changed in each O365 component, but OneDrive will still be the default save location

    A Mac is similar
