365 Microsoft defender - antivirus , so confusing.

I am confused about Microsoft Defender which requires a 365 subscription. I think because it is called the same as the old free one, googling about it is difficult.

My questions are can it replace a third-party antivirus like Norton or MacAfee? Can it be used with Chrome or does it require Edge? And is it rated as a good antivirus even compared to the more expensive third-party softwares?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,Bonswee

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

I understand that you have questions about Microsoft Defender.

I have read the official website (Microsoft Defender for Individuals | Microsoft 365)and have found the following information which you can review:

Difference between Microsoft Defender and the free version

**Microsoft Defender for individuals** is a cross-device app that helps individuals and families stay safer online.

**Windows Security** (formerly known as Windows Defender Security Center) is security built into Windows to help protect your device and data.

Can it replace third-party antivirus software

Microsoft recommends that you use it with Windows Security Center, or third-party software, rather than replacing it.

Can it be used with browsers such as Chrome

It integrates more tightly with Microsoft Edge, and in third-party browsers you may need to use it in the form of adding the Microsoft Defender plug-in

Is it rated as a better antivirus

Microsoft Defender has performed well in many independent tests and is generally considered a reliable antivirus.

Some paid third-party software may perform better on some specific features, but Microsoft Defender is strong enough for basic protection.
