I can't see the ruler in Word

I use Windows on a PC. I can't see the ruler at the top or side of my Word document. When I go to "view" the ruler icon is faded so the box can't be checked. When I go to File options, Advanced, Display, the box is already checked for show vertical ruler but it doesn't show. How do I get the ruler to show?

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

    I understand that you are unable to open the Ruler in Word!

    I tested it in your case, and usually the settings that can be modified for the ruler are the ones you mentioned! (in the toolbar "View", and in "Options")

    What view are you using, is it "Outline"? In this view, the ruler is not visible and the "Ruler" option is grayed out, which matches your description.

    You should be able to see the ruler if you switch the mode to "Print Layout", "Web Layout", "Draft". In "Web Layout" and "Draft", only horizontal rulers can be displayed, while in "Print Layout" view, both horizontal and vertical rulers can be displayed.
