Dear Stuart Tracey,
Thank you for posting your query in our community.
I understand your concern and would like to convey that YES we also get similar issue on our end. Instead of using a web browser to upload content to SharePoint, we recommend you to use OneDrive client for uploading files to SharePoint. So you can have a visual visual representation about the status of the file uploaded or failed to upload.
Please download the OneDrive client by clicking here --- >>> Download the OneDrive App for PC, Mac, Android, or iOS
Go to the SharePoint library and click on sync >> Please set up to the Office 365 account >> After setup you can drag and drop the files using File Explore.
You can see the icon next to the files to check file has been uploaded or not. also, you can see the status from the OneDrive tray
You can learn about OneDrive icon identity by clicking this link --->>What do the OneDrive icons mean?
I hope this helps If you have any additional questions or if you need any additional help regarding this or anything else at all - let me know, I'll be here to help you out.
And in the meantime, I hope you'll have a lovely day ahead, stay safe & take care!
Best regards,
Sophia
