OneNote - Custom Tags not showing in "Find Tags" window

Hello

I have a few custom tags used to help with Project Management on my team, but the tags are not showing up using the "Find Tags" feature as expected. OneNote will only find the custom tag if I am on the page that contains the tag. I've also found that this happens with any other tag besides a "To Do" tag. I have the "Show only unchecked items" box UNMARKED and I am searching "This Notebook". Does anyone else have this situation?

I have screen shots, but I can't upload them for some reason. I will attempt again later.

OneNote Version is MS 365

After a good deal of Google research, I found that we are not the only ones with this issue and the only solution available is a work-around.

If you find that you are not seeing all tags in a notebook, close the notebook and reopen it. The Find Tags function will not work properly. This worked for me in every Notebook that I was previously having the issue in.

Not the best work-around, but it makes the tagging function work as intended.

    I hope this helps.

I have the same issue. Tags Summary is incredibly flakey. Only shows Tags on the Page, although I'm requesting to see Tags across the Section. So frustrating. Basically makes Tags un-useable.

Thanks for the response. How often do you need to close and reopen the Notebook?

After doing this .. and working in the Notebook for an hour or so. The problem has come back.

Its only showing the TAGS that exist on the Page that is displayed, not within the Section - even though Search 'This Section' is selected.

Sorry - but this is SO FLAKEY ... really annoying. Its been this way for years - and the reason i cannot rely on OneNote.

I've also found that once a Notebook is open for a while, the Find Tags feature will stop working as intended, so you're not alone there either.

I close and reopen the Notebook anytime I want to use the Find Tags feature.

    Hi Engineer - Mechanical,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

For the issue of not being able to upload screenshots, it should be caused by the community. For now, I can successfully upload screenshots via "Insert Image".

  6. If the above suggestions don't help, I suggest you repair OneNote and check again.

Go to Windows Settings> "Apps & features" (or Apps> Installed apps)> type "OneNote" in the search bar. Check if you can see the OneNote desktop application. If you have multiple OneNote applications installed, please note that the OneNote application and OneNote for Windows 10 are two different apps.

If you can see OneNote, please click on the three dots, Modify, Repair, and choose Online Repair.

If you don't see OneNote, it is included in the Office suite, you need to repair the Office suite. Find and click on the Office suite (e.g. Microsoft 365 for business en-us), click on the three dots, Modify, Repair, and choose Online Repair.

If you have tried the above steps, but the problem still occurs, I would like to gather more information to troubleshoot.

  1. Does the situation happen in a specific notebook or all notebooks in OneNote? You can add custom tags in other notebooks and then check again.
  2. Does the situation happen in specific tags? You can create a new custom tag and check again.
  3. Provide your OneNote version and Product Information.

Click File> Account and provide information as shown below.
