How do I stop Office apps suggesting OneDrive when saving on Mac OS

Office 365 has many nice applications, but I do not want to save files and documents to OneDrive.

Every time I create a new document, Office 365 prefers to save it to OneDrive—or some other obscure place I do not even know what they are.

Is there something I can delete from MacOS to stop this behavior? Maybe I should use the terminal? It must have been triggered from somewhere and can also be removed.

Many have asked for this feature in various forums, but MS does not want to implement it.

I have sent several messages to Microsoft, but I am now hoping that someone with technical insight here can suggest something that can remedy this.

Thanks.

    Dear Mia,

This is not true; it is NOT a MacOS issue. Please read Ashley's message on this thread. I have also seen other comments from Windows users.

Users want to be able to control themselves where to save their documents.

I have tried to report this to MS multiple times, and maybe something will happen someday.

    Have a wonderful day.

Hi Ashley, I have heard nothing from anyone, but I get the impression that many think this behavior is ridiculous, as Microsoft tries to force users to use their new "baby" OneDrive.

A Microsoft moderator has tried to convince me that this is only related to MacOS, so I'm very happy that you can confirm that this behavior is also happening in Windows versions.

I know this tendency to say, hey, this is because of MacOS, so thanks for chiming in.

Do you have any updates? This also happens on Windows (whatever the latest version is).

Yes, once you save a file to a folder, it does default to that folder when you save again. New files, however, default to OneDrive.

Very annoying. Especially since this seems to be a newer "feature" and it wasn't always like this

    Dear respected,

We went through your post carefully and do understand your concern of Word application keeps asking you to save in OneDrive even if you want them to local drive always.

If my understanding is correct, from my tests on Word for Mac 16.83 and 16.84 just now, if I save a file to local folder(by clicking On my Mac), the next time Word will save it in the same local folder automatically since Word will remember the last save location.

However, I did find that in recent months, some other users are facing a similar issue as yours. See: How do I prevent Word from saving to OneDrive? (Word for Mac) - Microsoft Community And it seems like this happens on various versions and MacOS.

In this situation, there may have something needed to be investigated further from the application side instead of end users' sides. We will report this inconvenience user experience to the related Word product development team. And for end users, we suggest use the Feedback option inside application and so you can submit with more logs and information so that the product team can locate the root cause quickly. See: How do I give feedback on Microsoft 365? - Microsoft Support

We'll update here for you as soon as we receive any updates on this issue from the product team. I appreciate your time and effort on checking these above and thank you for your time and cooperation. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Mia | Microsoft Community Moderator
